"The Try a Tri” race is targeted at the novice athlete, who is wanting to try a triathlon but want to ease their way into it.  The Kai Iwi Lakes is a fresh water lake making this an ideal swim for those who aren't fans of the open ocean.

The Short Course Tri” race is targeted at the athletes who are wanting to step it up a little, but not quite ready for the Sprint + distance. The Kai Iwi Lakes is a fresh water lake making this an ideal swim for those who aren't fans of the open ocean.

The Sprint + Tri has a little longer run than your standard Sprint Tri hence the "+".  The run sees you taking in the stunning scenery as you navigate around the Kai Iwi lakes.

What time does the adult event start?

  • 9:15am Adults safety brief
  • 9.30am Adults Try a Tri- 100m Swim, 9km run, 2.5km run
  • 9.35am Adults Short Course- 350m Swim, 9km cycle, 3.5km run
  • 9.45am Adults Long Course- 700m Swim or 1500m Kayak, 20km cycle, 9km run

How does the team category work?

  • Team members must wait in the transition tent to be tagged by team members.
  • Teams will be issued with a wristband which will act as a baton for the team event. Each team member must pass on the wristband to the next member of their team before they can begin their leg.
  • Swimmers are to tag their cyclist in the tent area prior to them putting on their helmet or collecting their bike from transition (shoes may be put on prior to being tagged).
  • Cyclists are to tag their runner in the tent area after racking their bike and helmet.
  • must wear bib number high on the front of their or singlet.
  • One member of the team can complete up to two different legs for their and cycle, swim and run etc.
  • Swimmers and competing in the individual event may also compete in the swim/kayak and cycle as part of a team.
  • Individuals wishing to participate as part of a team will need to be entered in both events.

Are there drink stations?

Drink stations will be available on the run course at 2km, 5km, 7km and at the finish.

Are there showers, changing rooms and toilets?

Public toilets, changing rooms and cold showers are available at Pine Beach Camp.


  • Adults' and kids' prize giving will take place at Pine Beach at approximately 12.30pm.
  • All kids receive a wrist band and finishers certificate
  • Merit prizes will only be awarded to the first place getters in the adults event. All other prizes will be spot prizes.
  • Participants must be present at prize giving and show their event number to claim their prize.
We will acknowlegde and award trophies for the following placegetters. (one trophy per team)

Are there any age restrictions?

  • For health and safety reasons all entrants for the short and long course are required to be 15 years or older on event day to participant in the event.
  • Entrants under the age requirement may be given special dispensation to enter and compete in the short distance course.
  • Special dispensation for children under 15 must be applied for by the child's legal guardian, the form can be found HERE.
  • Please allow up to five working days for us to review and respond to your application.

What happens if there is a cancellation?

  • In the unlikely event of cancellation, notice will be posted on the Sport Northland Events Facebook Page. Where possible attempts will be made to email participants who have supplied an email address with their entry. While we endeavour to make a decision to cancel an event as early as possible, due to the nature of such events, situations can occur quickly and without warning close to the start of an event.
